80s day at the porterbrook

Residents Enjoy an 80s Inspired Day

Towards the end of January, the residents and staff at The Porterbrook Care Home enjoyed an 80’s inspired day. The staff and residents dressed up in the brightest colours, played the air guitar and had a choice of fish, chicken, or sausages with chips for lunch, all served in a basket.

The day was enjoyed by all, consisting of an 80’s quiz, music, moonwalking competition, and to top the day of the Home Manager Lyn played 80s music on her saxophone for the residents to dance along to.

Why the 80’s?

The 80s was a vibrant and engaging time that the residents of The Porterbrook Care Home remember. Our residents enjoyed reminiscing with a jam-packed afternoon full of 80s activities and evoking fond memories, enhancing communication and social connections.

Reminiscence at The Porterbrook Care Home

At The Portebrook Care Home, our dedicated activities coordinators make sure to regularly incorporate reminiscence therapy into our activities programme. Reminiscence therapy is a cognitive therapy that can be beneficial for us all, but especially for those living with different forms of dementia or cognitive disorders.

We actively encourage our residents to revisit previous occupations, hobbies and meaningful memories which can be as simple as a conversation and telling stories from their past.

There are many benefits to reminiscence therapy in a care home. Activities involving reminiscence such as our 80’s inspired days can improve the mood of our residents, reducing stress levels and cognition.

Many other benefits can include:

  • Preserves Family History
  • Helps Improve Their Quality of Life
  • Reduces Symptoms of Depression
  • Eliminates Boredom
  • Improves Communication Skills
