Our VE Day Celebrations!

This May, we proudly joined the nation in marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which is a moment in history that still resonates deeply for many of our residents. From the upbeat tunes of the morning to the quiet conversations over tea in the afternoon, the day was a thoughtful celebration filled with music, activities, memories, and the comforting sense of togetherness.

We began the day with live music from the talented Fiona Ball, who performed a selection of wartime classics and popular tunes from the 1940s. Her performance combined guitar and vocals and had many residents singing along, smiling and even swaying gently in their chairs. It brought a real sense of occasion to the morning, sparking memories and setting a lovely tone for the day.

In the afternoon, we shifted to a more reflective pace with a traditional afternoon tea served in our café bar. This gave us the perfect chance to use our beautiful new tea set, which residents had helped choose. Freshly baked scones, topped with jam and cream, were served alongside cups of tea as residents gathered together to reminisce. Many shared their memories of the original VE Day, offering moving personal stories of celebration, relief, and reflection.

For our residents who lived through the war, it was a powerful opportunity to reflect on their experiences and how life changed after peace was declared. For others, it was a chance to listen, ask questions and learn from those who had been there. The atmosphere throughout the day was one of respect, warmth and connection.

Throughout the day, our cinema space featured a series of war-themed programmes, including a screening of Dad’s Army, which added some light-hearted humour to the occasion. The laughter from the lounge was a lovely reminder that even on a day of remembrance, there’s always room for joy.

Events like this are a vital part of life at our home. They help build community, keep important memories alive, and create opportunities for all generations to come together. VE Day is more than a date to remember, it’s a part of many residents' life stories, and it was an honour to hear and share those stories.
